Wi-fi news: Everything you should know about Wi-Fi 6
Why Wi-Fi 6 is different and why is it important?
Everything you should know about Wi-Fi 6
What is the different?
Maybe you never think deeply about Wi-fi what you use and you did not even realize the quality change in the past years. Now we are going to tell you more about the next-generation wireless standard, the Wi-Fi 6, what is faster than 802.11ac. It is not only about the speed; it provides better performance in congested areas from huge facilities to your own home device. Wi-Fi 6 arrived in late 2019 and the compatible hardware has been released during 2020.
Maybe you didn’t know about it but Wi-Fi has version numbers. Those old, confusing Wi-Fi standard names like ‘802.11ac’ have been renamed to a user-friendly, more understandable name as ‘Wi-Fi 5’.
So far you can find these names for Wi-Fi:
– Wi-Fi 4 is equal of ‘802.11n’ what was released in 2009.
– Wi-Fi 5 was called 802.11ac, was released in 2014
– Wi-Fi 6 is the newest version, also named as 802.11ax. As we mentioned it was released in 2019.
The Wi-Fi Alliance also would like to see the renamed new numbers to appear in the software, so based on the number you can check which Wi-Fi network is newer and faster while you are connecting your devices. Probably it will be solved soon and you will be able to see the Wi-Fi numbers in your devices soon.
The more user-friendly names of Wi-Fi are still not mandatory to manufacturers to use but strongly recommended by the Wi-Fi Alliance. Even if Wi-Fi Alliance has no power to force companies to use the new Wi-Fi version numbers, they try to encourage the manufacturers to adopt them. We do hope they understand what mean simplicity what result a better understanding for their users.
Just for the full picture we have to mention the older version Wi-fi. These aren’t officially being branded, but is they were, here is what they would be called:
- Wi-Fi 1 –> would have been 802.11b, was released in 1999.
- Wi-Fi 2 –> would have been 802.11a, also released in 1999.
- Wi-Fi 3 –> would have been 802.11g, released in 2003.
Faster Wi-Fi, how is the performance of Wi-fi 6
Obviously the latest Wi-fi standards offers faster data transfer speeds. When you use your device with a Wi-fi router the maximum potential speeds should be up to 40% higher with Wi-fi 6 compared to the previous Wi-fi 5.
Wi-fi 6 reach this performance through more efficient data encoding, with a higher throughput result. Basically more data is in the same radio waves. Those chips what was used for encode and decode these signals are more and more powerful and they can handle the extra work.
The new standard of Wi-fi even increases the speeds on 2.4GHz networks. While the industry use 5GHz Wi-fi for less interference, the 2.4GHz is still has a better performance at penetrating solid objects.
Facts about Wi-fi 6 what you should know
- Solution for Longer Battery Life
The new TWT (target wake time) feature means that your device what is enabled to use Wi-Fi should have longer battery life.
When the two point is communicating (the access point connecting to a device), it can give the information about the device’s requirement. It can tell the device exactly when to put its Wi-Fi radio to sleep mode and when to start to use it to receive the next transmission. This will save power because the Wi-Fi radio can stay more time in a sleep mode. And this is the consequence: more sleep mode means longer battery life.
2. It has better performance in busy or crowded places
Wi-Fi usually get bogged down when the user is in a crowded place with a lots of other Wi-Fi enabled devices users. These facilities usually are airports, hotels, stadiums, malls or even a big office can be affected. In these places the user probably experiencing slow Wi-Fi.
For these situations the new Wi-Fi 6 is a good solution as its new technologies are helping on this. In congested areas where a lots of connected devices are under use, the Wi-Fi 6 can results at least four times faster average speed.
This not only apply to busy public places, it can be performing like that even in your home where you connect lots of devices to Wi-Fi.
3. Wi-Fi 6 fights against congestion
An average user doesn’t really need to know too much details about it. The main thing is that Wi-Fi 6 access point will work better with a Wi-Fi 6 device. But we give you some light in the tunnel about this:
Wi-Fi 6 has a feature what can divide the wireless channel into a large number of subchannels. All these subchannels are able to carry data intended for different devices. Thanks to this achieved feature the Wi-Fi access point is able to communicate to more devices at once.
Some advice when you are about to buy a new device
When you are planning to buy a new device, you don’t have to hunting for the information about the Wi-Fi spec, as the manufacturer can say that the device has Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 5. You do not have to memorize those codes what we mentioned already in this article.
For a new device the manufacturers start to use a sign ‘Wi-Fi 6 Certified’ as a logo on devices. These devices have gone through the Wi-Fi Alliance’s certification process.
The previously used ‘Wi-Fi Certified’ logo was not enough specific, as it didn’t show you what generation of Wi-Fi can be used with the product.
What is the timing, when can you get it?
Some routers probably already shows the sign of ‘802.11ax technology’, but Wi-Fi 6 is still not finalized. At the moment there is no any Wi-Fi 6 client devices available yet.
The standard was finalized in 2019 by the Wi-Fi Alliance, and Wi-Fi 6 enabled hardware was released in 2019-2020.
For the future the new devices (smartphones, laptops, tablets and all Wi-Fi enabled devices) will just come out with this new technology.
Since these technologies always under development we have to mention that Wi-Fi 6E also come out. This can serve 6 GHz rather than the typical 2.4 GHz or the 5 GHz. For sure the Wi-Fi 6E hardware will arrive only after the Wi-Fi 6 hardware.
We do hope that this information helps you to better understanding what is going on with Wi-Fi developments.
