As we’ve reported earlier this year, and we’ve been waiting for the big news, finally Apple has made its announcement about M2.

Apple just announced M2 as the beginning of the next generation of Apple silicon designed especially for Mac.
Equipped with second-generation 5-nanometer technology, the M2 delivers industry-leading performance with 18 percent faster CPU. That’s mean 35 percent more powerful GPU and 40 percent for a faster Neural Engine. It also means 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the M1, up to 24GB of fast unified memory. The M2 has developed all of these enhancements and other unique technology and efficiency tools for the MacBook Air and the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro.
The senior vice president of HardWare Technologies of Apple, Johny Srouji said about this:
“M2 starts the second generation of M-series chips and goes beyond the remarkable features of M1,” With our relentless focus on power-efficient performance, M2 delivers a faster CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. And along with higher memory bandwidth and new capabilities like ProRes acceleration, M2 continues the tremendous pace of innovation in Apple silicon for the Mac.”
What is new and better with M2?
- M2 means More Transistors and More Memory. How?
The M2 chip-on-a-chip (SoC) design has been further developed with second-generation nanometer technology and consists of 20 billion transistors. That’s 25 percent more than what was in the M1. Additional transistors improve features throughout the whole chip, including the memory controller. This memory controller provides a unified memory bandwidth of 100 GB, which is 50 percent higher compared to the M1. An additional super feature of the M2 is that with up to 24GB of fast unified memory, it will be able to handle even larger and more complex workloads.
2. It has a faster, and Power-Efficient Performance
The new CPU features faster performance with the larger cache have been significantly enhanced for a much better performance gains. Together these new featres deliver 18 percent greater performance than M1. That means M2 can rip through CPU-intensive tasks with a very little power usage. If you compare the M2 with the latest 10-core PC laptop chip, the statement is that the CPU in M2 delivers nearly double performance of the PC chip while using just 25 percent of the power.
If you compare the M2 with the latest 12-core PC laptop chip, which needs significantly more power to deliver an increase in performance, not to mention the thicker, hotter and more noisy system with less battery life, the experience is nearly 90 percent of the peak performance of the 12-core chip while using just one-forth of the power.
In M2 also in the Apple’s next generation GPU with up to 10 cores. That means two more cores than what they have in M1. The graphics performance is developed too in M2 compared with M1 thanks to the combination of the larger cache and a higher memory bandwidth. The 10-core GPU delivers a big increase of the graphics performance, with max power this means 35 percent better performance.
If you compare the M2 with a latest PC laptop chip, we can say that M2 delivers 2.3 times faster performance at the same power level. The peak performance using only a fifth of the power. From M2 the higher performance per watt enables the system to have an extraordinary, much higher battery life, not to mention the fact that it runs cool and quietly, even when the user plays a graphics-intensive game or working on editing huge RAW images.
What else we have in Apple’s next-generation custom technologies?
Apple with M2 bring the newest and custom technologies to the Mac, new features and capabilities, with better security, and more features:
- The Neural Engine able to process up to 15.8 trillion operations per second – this is a 40 percent increase compared with M1
- It has a higher-bandwidth video decoder (media engine includes that), what supporting 8K H.264 and HEVC video too.
- The powerful ProRes video engine enables playback of multiple streams of both the 4K and 8K video.
